Audiological Findings in Acromegaly Patients

چکیده
Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was performed on 26 patients with acromegaly and 27 age-matched healthy controls. Otoscopic examination, pure tone odiometry, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, and stapes reflex were performed in all cases. Hearing thresholds of air and bone conduction (AC and BC), middle ear function, cochlear function, tympanic membrane compliance, gradient, peak pressure, and external ear canal volume were researched in patients with acromegaly. Results: The hearing thresholds for all frequencies except Right-AC 4000 frequencies were found to be significantly higher in patients with acromegaly as compared to the control group (p<0.05). Also, significant correlation coefficients were calculated among disease duration, hearing thresholds, and tympanometric variables (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in tympanometry results between the two groups in regard to external ear canal volumes of the right and left ears (p≤0.05). No differences were observed between the two groups in their type of tympanometry, stapes reflex, and otoacoustic emissions (OAE) (p>0.05). Conclusions: We have determined that patients with acromegaly have lower levels of hearing in both bone and air conduction compared with the normal population. This may be ascribed to deformation of hearing physiology related to hypertrophy in the temporal bone.

The Combination Therapy with Bromocriptine and Cyproheptadine in Patients with Acromegaly
The therapeutic efficacy of the combination of cyproheptadine and bromocriptine was studied in 15 patients with active acromegaly showing incomplete GH suppression in response to bromocriptine therapy alone. The mean basal plasma GH was 31.3±5.5 µg/L, and it decreased to 19.0±3.9 µg/L during the single bromocriptine therapy (10-20 mg for 2 to 21 months). When cyproheptadine (12 to 16 mg for 8 t...

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate audiological outcomes following adenoidectomy by the classical method and by endoscopically-assisted adenoidectomy using a powered instrument (microdebrider). Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in a tertiary care center. It included 40 patients divided into two equal groups of 20 each. Group-A patients underwent classical a...
متن کاملCutaneous findings in patients with acromegaly.
Acromegaly is a systemic syndrome caused by overproduction of growth hormone. The syndrome affects cutaneous, endocrine, cardiovascular, skeletal, and respiratory systems. Cutaneous manifestations of acromegaly are various, usually being the first presenting findings of the disease. Forty-nine patients with acromegaly, followed-up at a tertiary referral hospital, underwent dermatological examin...

The pituitary-Thyroid axis of 12 Acromegalic patients was evaluated by measurement of the concentration (Total and free of thyroxine T4, T3 and revers T3 (rT3) and TSH, GH and prolactin before and after in stimulation with TRH. Using an ultrasensitive method of TSH measurement (IRMA) basal serum TSH levels of patients (0.76, 0.07-l.90mlU/L) were found slightly but significantly (P < 0.01), low...
